Mud rotation is often used for soft sediments that may or may not be saturated with groundwater.

Dual Rotary:

Unlike other drill rigs that use only the top drive, the dual rotary uses both the top drive and the bottom head drive to advance the drill bit and casing. Dual rotation technology provides high performance on unconsolidated topsoil (sand, gravel, boulders, rocks) that is difficult to pierce in the case with other technologies. The top drive rotary head drills a drill string with either a downhole hammer, a drag drill, or a roller cone drill bit to drill the center.
