Things to know about different types of pipe nipples

In piping and plumbing, a nipple is a pipe’s short piece, typically with external or male threads in one end or two ends. It is employed for connecting two other pipes or fittings. The threads located at the pipe nipple’s two ends are offered in different or same types, such as NPT threaded to high quality BSP threaded pipe nipple.

Some types of nipples
Barrel nipples

Sometimes, pipe nipples are called barrel nipples which, unless otherwise specified, are tapered NPT threaded at each end with their unthreaded area in the center. Nipples with threading at both ends are referred to as T.B.E, an abbreviation of threaded ends. When we look at the nipple’s lengths, their length is defined by the total length, which includes the threads.

T.O.E Pipe Nipple

T.O.E is an abbreviation of threaded one end. Typically, this kind of nipple is employed as oil tanks’ legs. Sometimes, threaded pipe nipples are confused with weld nipples, but original weld nipples have a beveled end finishing that is needed specifically for butt weld connections.

Weld pipe nipples

These nipples are equipped with no threads. They attach to tube fittings by threading versus welding. Under extreme conditions such as vibration, temperature changes and pressure rises, weld nipples can be suitably used. The weakening of weld nipples is not done by cut threads which can decrease the thickness of the wall and thus undermine its structural strength.

Close pipe nipples

These nipples are without threads. This means that when screwing of a couple of female fittings onto the nipple’s both ends is done, the nipple’s very tiny area will yet be exposed.

Shoulder pipe nipples

The length of the shoulder nipples is greater than that of the close nipple. It includes a very tiny unthreaded area between the threads. The unthreaded area is not big enough for fitting a pipe wrench. When screwing of two female fittings is done onto either end, a nipple’s small piece will continue to be exposed.

Hex pipe nipple

A Hex pipe nipple has got its name from its hexagon-shaped middle section. The hexagon shape permits the wrench to grab it safely. If you find a hex pipe nipple with its two different sizes on each end, it is called an unequal or reducer nipple.

Right-left hand nipples

These nipples have a right-hand thread on one end and a left-hand thread on another. Usually, this pipe nipple style is employed for gas piping or in piping applications where unions are not permitted. Right-left hand nipples can also connect to female pipe thread inside union-less installations.

Swage pipe nipple

Swage pipe nipples are employed for bringing the fluids’ flow from one pipe to another. You can find swage nipples that are beveled, plain, or with threaded ends. The swage nipple is responsible for changing the diameter of a pipe and connecting two different sized pipes. There are two types of swage nipples. These include eccentric swage nipples and concentric swage nipples.
